ITANAGAR, May 29:The All Papum Pare District Students’ Union (APPDSU) today has urged the state government to permanently shift the Chakma population residing in Papum Pare district. Chakmas are presently settled at Sessa, Sonajuli, Koklia and Karbi Hollongi areas under Papum Pare District with a population of 2248 in numbers as per Census 2016.
Chakmas were allotted to stay in temporary refugee camp assigned to them by the Government of India during the NEFA period when then Arunachal Pradesh was under the administrative control of Assam. But today it seems that every successive state government is trying to settle them permanently in the temporary allotted refugee camp under the pressure from the Centre, the union stated in a release.
Since time immemorial the land belongs to the indigenous people of Papum Pare district. Since last 5 decades they are staying in our land without the consent of our people. Now it’s high time that state government should cancel the temporary refugee camp allotted to them and shifted to other place, it further stated.
Terming the growing population of Chakmas in the district as a big concern for the indigenous people, the union has asked the government to take up the issue in the next Assembly Session.
