KHONSA, Feb 16: A mass rally against drugs & opium (Kani) abuse was carried out by a local women society in association with the district administration and other like-minded organizations which saw active participation of the general public.

For the first time in the history of Tirap, the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, HODs,14 women groups, NGOs etc resulting in a 5000-strong crowd participated in the rally covering almost 4 KM distance.

The sleepy small town resonated with  slogans like—no drugs…save Tirap, khud ko jagao…nashe ko bhagao, humko yahi batana hai…nashe ko bhagana hai, drug abuse no excuse and so on.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Tirap, PN Thungon, made a clarion call against drugs and drug abuse. He made it loud and clear that no one will be spared if found guilty of trafficking, selling or consuming drugs in the district. While categorically explaining the bad effects of drugs on society and the family in particular, he appealed the public to support the women groups and district administration to root out the menace from the district.

Further, he announced an award of Rs.10000 to any person who gives information or tip off leading to the arrest of peddlers, selling or consuming drugs or opium (kani) in the district.

While extending thanks to the women groups and the public for their support, he assured that, “no stone will be left unturned” to make the district free from drugs and its menace.

SP Jitendra Kr Meena, speaking on the occasion reiterated that drugs, opium (kani) is a poison which disrupts society economically, physically and invites chaos leading to unrest and affects the peace and tranquillity of the area. Citing examples of various localities which have fallen prey to this menace and witnessing their decline in development, education front, he appealed people to be the change to change society.

ADC T. Aran, being a native explained the need to shun drugs in the local dialect so that it strikes a chord with the general masses. 

Members of women SHGs, public also spoke on the occasion and vehemently condemned the trend which has prevailed with the advent of drugs in to their society and expressed their anguish where the younger generation is heading to.
