ITANAGAR, Dec 11: All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) under the aegis of Northeast Students Organization organized 'black day' in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 here today at NEFA Club.
Hundreds of AAPSU and NESO members including students from various universities and colleges participated in the protest. Holding placards and black badges members shouted slogans against the CAA and demanded its repeal.
Speaking on the occasion, General Secretary AAPSU Tobom Dai said the protest was held to show their anguish at the Centre's arrogance in imposing CAA despite huge protests from the people of the Northeast. December 11 will be remembered as black day in the history of Northeast for imposing CAA in the country.
“We are not against any tribe or religion, but law of the land should be paramount. In Arunachal indigenous people are facing the wrath of CAA because despite having Inner Line Permit in the state, there are Chakma –Hajong refugees creating discord in the state. We thank Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Chief Minister Pema Khandu for the decision to deport the refugees from the state but we want them to walk the talk and not give lip service only," said Dai.
Since December 2019, we are observing black day after the central government cleared the Bill in both houses of parliament, said Coordinator NESO, Pritam Waii Sonam while adding the organization will continue to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act till it’s repealed. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in Parliament on December 11, 2019 amid protests. The objective of the CAA is to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted minorities -- Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian -- from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
The CAA says that people from these communities who had come to India till December 31, 2014 due to religious persecution, will not be treated as illegal immigrants and will be given citizenship.
