ITANAGAR, Oct 10:Amidst high security, thousands of students from various parts of the capital complex joined the mass protest rally organized by the Students Union Movement of All Arunachal (SUMAA) against the Tibetan Rehabilitation Policy here today against the government’s decision to implement the Centre’s Tibetan Rehabilitation Policy, 2014.

Slogan shouting activists of the Students’ United Movement of All Arunachal (SUMAA) marched from Ganga to Mithun Gate with banners and posters that demanded rollback of the government’s decision.

The SUMAA asserted that indigenous tribal population of the state would suffer if the policy was implemented.

Speaking to the media, President SUMAA, Tagru Tame opined that the rally is first phase of protest against the government’s decision for adopting TRP in the state. The district administration had on Monday declared the rally as “illegal”.

‘We demand immediate rollback of the decision or else the union can go to any extent to protect the rights of the indigenous people,’ he added while asserting that besides SUMAA there are dozens of NGOs and social organizations who have submitted memorandums to the state government to rollback the TRP but the state is not heeding to the issue.

Arunachal Pradesh has the fourth largest population of Tibetans in India. The state cabinet, during its August 12 sitting, had decided to implement the central policy.

According to the guidelines of the policy, Tibetans would be allowed to undertake economic activities relevant permits would be issued to them. The policy would also allow them to take up jobs if they were professionally qualified.

The state government had issued a statement on Monday stating that it would look into the interest of the state and its indigenous population before implementing the policy. (with PTI inputs)
