BANDERDEWA, Apr 28: Heavy rain accompanied by squall last night threw life out of gear in several parts of the twin capital.

While residents of Itanagar and Naharalgun had a harrowing time due to water-logging in most of the sector roads and market areas, the worst affected are the people living near low lying areas of Banderdawa as heavy downpour and storm has caused heavy damages to property, agriculture field, granary store, School building, Private RCC building also killing few domesticated animals.

The most affected area is reported to be Chessa-Sunajuli Panchayat, when at around 8 pm Thursday night, residents witnessed the worst of the storm, which damaged more than 150 homes in the area. In few areas, several electric poles and cables were broken and the electricity supply to many areas and adjoining Banderdewa was snapped for hours.

Felling of betel nut trees due to heavy storm has caused obstruction in vehicular movement and reported to have partially damaged boundary wall of Van Vigyan Kendra, Chessa.

Reportedly five people have sustained injuries and hundreds rendered homeless after the incident.

Further, on receipt of the information, local MLA cum Minister Urban Development, Land Management etc Nabam Rebia along with Capital DC In-charge Talom Dupok, CO Banderdewa Pama Bagang along with PRIs rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation.

The team  visited almost every household all along the area by foot to Chessa-I, Chessa-II, Sunajuli, Chakma Block-8.

On the spot Rebia consoled the affected people and assured all possible support for rehabilitation from the Government.

He requested the local leaders to extend physical help in rehabilitation process and directed the In-charge DC Dupok to immediately assess the loss to property.

 Later Rebia also exhorted the Disaster Management Department for immediate payment of compensation to the affected families and directed the AE Power who accompanied the visiting team to restore power supply within a week.
