ITANAGAR, Nov 30: Today, a coordination meeting was held between Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority and Officer-in-Charge of Police Stations, Chimpu, Niti Vihar, Itanagar (C-Sector) and Women Police Station of Itanagar Capital Complex  at Itanagar. The meeting was initiated by Arunachal Pradesh SLSA to explore the feasibility of setting up of Legal Aid Clinics in the premises of Police Stations to provide free and competent legal services to the poor and weaker sections of society, which is a constitutional mandate enshrined in Article 39A of the Indian Constitution. 
Jaweplu Chai, Member Secretary, APSLSA while highlighting the role and functions of Legal Aid Clinic, apprised the provisions under National Legal Services Authority’s protocol of providing legal assistance to persons at Pre-Arrest, Arrest and Remand Stage which is a pre-requisite right of persons eligible under section 12 of Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 and stressed that to execute the framework Legal Aid Clinic is to be opened in every police stations for providing access to justice at all stages of criminal process. She informed that a Legal Aid Clinic established a month back at Police Station, C sector Itanagar is catering to the needs of every poor needy person who approaches the clinic, which is manned by a dedicated Para Legal Volunteer six days a week and an active Para Legal Volunteer. Dani Belo, Deputy Secretary of Department of Law & Judicial, & OSD of APSLSA emphasized that Police Stations across the State have important role in providing legal aid to the persons against whom criminal proceedings have been initiated against them as it pertains to exercise of their rights, life and personal liberty and in many occasions, the arrested persons are not aware of their rights on such arrest, detention and therefore, the establishment of Legal Aid Clinic at the Police Station complex would help and facilitate the concerned arrested persons in knowing their rights and in this way the constitutional mandate of making legal aid available to every sections of society could be fulfilled to a great extent.
