MALIGAON, Feb 23: The International seminar organized by the Institution of Permanent Way Engineers (IPWE), India was held today at Gauhati. The subject of this seminar was “Leveraging developments in Monitoring Technology for optimizing Track, Bridge and Tunnel Maintenance”. The topic is of great significance in the present scenario when Indian Railway, the life line of nation, is on the path of unprecedented process and cultural reform, consolidation and expansion mode. In this seminar delegates from all over India and overseas belonging to Permanent Way fraternity shared their experience. During seminar deliberations on monitoring technology for maintenance of track, bridges and tunnels has taken place and thought provoking papers supported by extensive field data presented. 

 

The seminar was attended by Member Engineering Railway Board, MK Gupta, Additional Members, General managers of different zones, retired Railway board Members, representatives of technology firms from India and abroad and engineers from all over Indian Railway across different ranks.

 

Inaugurating the seminar, Minister of state of Railways, Rajen Gohain stated that such deliberations play a very crucial role in the context of the renewed thrust on technology to bring about a paradigm change in railways. Track engineers, he said played the most crucial role in ensuring safety.

 

For the first time IPWE (India) seminar has been organised by Northeast Frontier Railway.  It is very significant considering the fact that, in recent time, lot of importance has been assigned by the government and Railways to strengthen and expand rail network in North-east region. This seminar has provided an opportunity to the Railwaymen from this region to participate in large number and garner latest information and knowledge. Safety being the first and topmost priority, it will automatically bring reliability, punctuality and customer satisfaction in train operation.

 

Delivering the keynote address, Member engineering MK Gupta said that, upgrade the standard of maintenance of track and other engineering assets, to eliminate the accidents on engineering account & casualties due to run over cases of track maintainers and accidents at unmanned level crossings, it is essential to introduce large scale modern monitoring technologies in the field of Track, Bridges and Tunnel maintenance and in many more areas, which will reduce the element of subjectivity due to interface of technology with human efforts.

 

Under the guidance of Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal, inductions of new technologies to reduce human dependence are being done. Road map for complete mechanisation of track maintenance has already been drawn which is expected to be completed by year 2024. Due to these initiatives, over 750 large track machines will be inducted in next 3 years time as against a total fleet of 850 numbers existing today. To improve safety, in the year 2017-18, a target of 3,600 kms of track renewal with an unprecedented outlay of Rs 9,305 crore has been fixed. Moreover, Rs 11,450 crore has been allocated for track renewal works in the budget of year 2018-19 to improve safety.
