PASIGHAT, Oct 11: Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary (AH&V) headed by DVO Dr. Jikom Panor conducted a mass vaccination programme of Mithuns (Bos frontalis) on Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Ledum village to make mithun owners aware of scientific animal husbandry practices as part of outreach programme. Notably Ayeng, Ledum and Mirem villages have highly dense mithun population in the district and the AH&V department has given special emphasis through such efforts to encourage and boost mithun farming, which is a very viable economic activity.

FMD is one of the most common viral disease of globen footed animals that includes mithun, cattle, pig goat, deer etc. More than hundred mithuns were vaccinated and mithun farmers were guided on medication and other related veterinary care. Serum sample for sero surveillance activities was also carried out to ascertain the presence and strain of virus in the animal body.

ADC (Hq) T Borang while inaugurating the camp, lauded the efforts of AH&V department for conservation mithuns and also to uplift the economic status of mithun farmers. He also encouraged the villagers to avail the opportunity and follow the discipline of scientific technique of livelihood enhancement and management. Borang also appreciated the cooperation of veterinary officers and members of All Mithun Owner welfare Association of Ledum adding that mithun is considered as one of the most important economic assets in the tribal society and an important source of income generation and livelihood opportunities for the rural people in particular.
