PASIGHAT, Jun 9: In an effort to lodge public protest against setting up of an IMFL distillation plant (factory) at Industrial Growth Centre, Niglok, under Ruksin Sub-Division here in East Siang District, more than a thousand women and men led by Women Against Social Evils (WASE) carried out a protest rally from Asha Lab, High Region to main Market, Gandhi Chowk today.

The WASE members and their supporters from several villages, CBOs and organizations thronged the streets today to press their demand to scrap the proposed IMFL distillation unit at Niglok.

While shouting slogans like ‘our enemy alcohol factory’, ‘say no to IMFL factory’, the rally culminated at Gandhi Chowk, main market where a formal public speech programme was held.

The WASE strongly pleaded and reminded the BJP led state government under the Chief Ministership of Pema Khandu of Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ideology and commitment to fight for a “Nasha Mukht Bharat”.

The WASE marked that, due to menace of drugs and alcoholism, the rate of road traffic accidents (RTA) resulting in death, robberies, gang fights among children, school dropouts etc is increasing at an alarming rate which needs timely check. It opined that, the companies may certainly say/agree not to sell their product locally, but pilferages and bootlegging are sure to happen and said products will directly be available to the youths which will only aggravate the matter from bad to worse.  The women folks also raised apprehension over possible wrong impact of the IMFL unit at the same premises where state’s first Sainik School is under establishment now which is completely illogical.

The WASE activists are likely to meet Chief Minister on Saturday over the issue who will be here in the town on a scheduled visit along with Union Minister for Tribal Affairs and submit a memorandum seeking immediate scrapping of the proposed plant.

The rumour mill is abuzz about proprietor of the said IMFL plant already paying huge money to some of the state’s think-tank due to which he is also worried over cancellation of the project. However, this paper cannot confirm the veracity of such reports.
