PASIGHAT, Feb 3:

 

Having lost his source of livelihood, a man has launched a hunger strike against the Border Road Task Force (BRTF) seeking compensation for damage to his agricultural land.

 

Kayon Apum of Sigar village under Mebo Sub-Division launched the two-day protest against BRTF this morning alleging non-payment of compensation for damage to large hectares of agricultural lands.

 

Camping at the entry gate of BRTF’s Project Brahmank HQ, Raneghat along with family and well-wishers, Apum says that left with no option this is his last resort.

 

I have been running from pillar to post to get compensation for my agricultural land destroyed by the river diversion constructed by the BRTF at Siku Bridge point during 2015 last, he said.

 

He further claims that Siku River had never overflowed into the village even during major flood season in the past, but the river diversion construction at Siku bridge point along NH-13 between Mebo and Ayeng changed that.

 

Validating the claims, the district administration had also prepared a Damage Assessment Report which was submitted to the concern Chief Engineer of the Project Brahmank and several correspondences on the matter was sent from the administration’s end.

 

 “Despite all formalities done and properly assessed and verified by the state government officials, the BRTF is now trying to play down the entire matter,” Apum adds.

 

70-year-old Head Gaon Burah, Bangkal Apum also blamed the BRTF for wrongful river course diversion which has adversely affected the villagers.

 

Meanwhile, Chief Engineer, BRTF Project Brahmank, Er CC Jalil declined to comment on the matter.
