NAMSAI, Feb 28:Three people in Namsai town including a Monk were injured when a leopard attacked and created panic in the town on Wednesday morning. The injured trio have been admitted to a hospital where their condition is stated to be out of danger.
The leopard was spotted by people in the heart of Namsai Town when unexpectedly it attacked one of the shopkeepers..
‘On receiving the information we rushed to the spot and found people pelting stones on the wild cat despite our repeated pleas, so we had to take support from local police to protect the animal,’ informed District Forest Officer, T Mize.
Mize further added that since they have no equipment to rescue the leopard, forest officials contacted Wild Life Trust of India from Duliajan, Assam and the veterinarian of the trust with one of its official were finally able to tranquilize the leopard in the afternoon. The animal has been sent to Tinsukia for further treatment and to be keep in custody of Kaziranga (Assam) forest officials.
Informing that the department will compensate the injured, he however said that the incident is a serious alarm as rampant deforestation will witness wild animals trespassing into human settlements.
‘I also extend my gratitude to various NGOs, Tai Khamti Singhpho Council and media person who stopped the public from pelting stones on the leopard. Such support is the need of the hour to protect wild animals,’ said the DFO.
