ITANAGAR, Mar 8:The International Women’s Day themed ‘press for progress’ was observed across Arunachal today with daylong activities.

At Don Bosco Youth Centre, the day was celebrated by the Arunachal Pradesh Women's Welfare Society (APWWS) in collaboration with WCD, APSLSA, IGSSS.

Parliamentary Secretary Gum Tayeng who attended as chief guest lauded the APWWS for its contribution towards women’s welfare in the state. She also highlighted the various aspects of women empowerment and also recalled her childhood days when education for girls was a dream. She expressed happiness that women today has come far and progressed in various fields.

Deputy Commissioner Capital Complex Prince Dhawan stressed that the day itself signifies women empowerment and it is important that the day should be celebrated in a grand way. He informed that as a step towards the overall development of the state in general and womenfolk in particular, all the schools will soon get a separate toilet for both boys and girls for which funds have already been issued by the DA. Moreover, the DA is also constructing community toilets in all the prominent locations for which he sought cooperation of APWWS to do the social audit of the toilets once the works are completed.

The DC also assured that CCTVs would be installed in all the vulnerable locations of the Capital Complex for which he again sought the cooperation of the APWWS in identifying the locations. He also assured to provide street lights in the Capital Complex. 

The DC further stressed that women are worshipped as deities everywhere and it is high time that the safety and security of women should be the top priority and hoped that the above steps taken by DA would ensure safety and security of the womenfolk in the Capital Complex.

He further informed that a local complain committee has also been formed to attend to the complaints of sexual harassment at workplace and urged everyone to approach the committee if they ever face such encounter. He also lauded the APWWS for proposing a new gender budget and appreciated that the gender sensitization is increasing everywhere.

He also cited vending zones run by women as an example of women empowerment.

During the programme, the DC also signed an MoU with the Oju Welfare Mission on Women Helpline and one stop centre that seeks to provide toll free 24 hrs services to women affected by violence and to provide integrated support and assistance to women affected by violence. With the signing of the MoU, the District Administration would be the implementing agency of the above two schemes.

Former Spokespersons APWWS Jarjum Ete, and Gumri Ringu also spoke on the occasion. 

The highlight of the programme was short films depicting sexual harassment at work, domestic violence, cyber crimes by SP Capital Complex Sagar Singh Kalsi. The SP also briefly explained the moral of each of the video that encourages voices to be raised against any kind of atrocities towards women. 

Various skits were presented by students depicting importance of girl’s education, women empowerment etc.

Resource person Jumgam Jini Legal Aid Counsel APSLSA spoke on sexual harassment at work places.

Budi Habung member secretary APSLSA gave a brief highlight on Free Legal Aid.

Earlier, Kani Nada Maling Secretary General APWWS and Bengia Dipti Tadar President APWWS also spoke.

Later, an awareness programme was also organised at Akashdeep complex in the evening where Capital Police along with Nagrik Bhaichara Committee showed videos on various topics such as cyber crimes, drug abuse, self defence, domestic violence and sexual harassment at workplace. The DC highlighted the importance of women working in every field right from vending zone to various NGOs to households etc.

More than 250 people participated and they especially appreciated the self defense demo exhibited by Arunachal Pradesh Police.

In the evening, a special screening of a movie on women empowerment specially related to the legal remedies was held at Convention Hall, Itanagar. It was an endeavour to encourage women to know about various legal remedies available.

 

IWD was observed at  Itanagar  by F Sector Women Welfare Association in collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society, Naharlagun.

Speaking on the occasion, Higio Aruni, Counsellor Ward No 11 stressed on the role women in building a family.

Dy. Director (IEC) APSACS, Tashor Pali, while attending the programme as the Resource Person, highlighted the high incidence of HIV among the women as they remain more vulnerable to HIV compared to their male counterpart. 

Women are biologically more susceptible to HIV infection. As per a study nearly 60 percent of infections at the moment are in women, most of them in younger women, he said.

Financial dependence makes it difficult for women to negotiate condom use, or to refuse sex if they suspect the partner is infected. Monogamy does not always protect women, either. Once infected, women's access to testing and treatment is in many ways dictated by the male partner, especially in rural societies, he added. Therefore women empowerment is the need of the hour to contain HIV, he said.

Resource Person from Beti bachao beti padao Project, Arpita, highlighted on the importance of female child in a society. At the same time she expressed her happiness on the fact that the women in Arunachal Pradesh are more empowered in comparison to women in the states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan etc.

 

Celebrating the day, Confederation of Service Associations of Arunachal Pradesh (CoSAAP), Women Wing took out fruit distribution to female patients and nappies to new born babies at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences and other hospitals in the twin capital including Donyi Polo Mission School for Hearing and Visual Impaired, Chimpu. 

AT BOMDILA,

The Women Cell of Government College Bomdila organized a rally to mark the International Women’s Day here at district headquarters Bomdila today.

The celebration themed as “Press for Progress” saw the participation of hundreds of students and teachers. An essay writing competition on Women’s right was also organized to mark the day.

To commemorate the celebration, prizes for the ‘National Competition on Legal Awareness of Women’s Right’ organized by the Women’s Cell in collaboration with the National Commission of Women, New Delhi in October last was also given away by Principal Sangja Khandu.

AT YAZALI,

Along with the rest of the world, the Mahila Morcha of Lower Subansiri district unit of BJP organised the day here in a befitting manner.

Large number of women from various parts of the District participated in the celebration.

Attending the occasion as the chief guest MLA cum Parliamentary Secretary for Transport, Likha Saaya urged women to give due importance particularly on health and women’s education.

Expressing his displeasure over neglecting of own mother tongue by the younger generation, he exhorted them to work for the preservation of own language. As the women are more attached to children at home, they should try to encourage their children to learn own language beside hindi or English which are the medium in education. Role of mother is important towards improvement and preservation of own language, he added.  

The IWD was also celebrated at Chongkhow Village under Wakka Circle organised by Chongkhow Women Welfare Society.

Tirap Deputy Commissioner P.N. Thungon while attending the Women’s Day program at Kaimai organized by Nocte Women Society said that women are the creators and the main pillars of the family and society, and appealed them to have hygienic life and practices.

SP Tirap, JK Meena, dealt in length on women protection act and its attributes and in a very concise way encouraged the women to stand for their rights and also to contribute to society positively.

 The international women’s day was observed with pomp and gaiety here today by the Arunachal Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, Itanagar.

Vice president, APMCC,  Mai Modi delivered speech on importance of observing the day and suggested her fellow women party workers to work hard for the cause of human kind. General Secretary APCC cum in-charge APMCC elaborated about the aims & objectives of the day and remembered the legendary women who had sacrificed their lives for well being of the women community. Members from APCC, APYC also joined the celebration.

 Nagrik Bhaichara Samity (NVS)  today observed the International Women's Day in a unique way  by distributing flowers to all women drivers besides sensitizing them about traffic rules and safety in the twin state capital .

Holding flowers in hand the samity members early morning gathered at three separate locations in Itanagar, Naharlagun and Banderdawa where they distributed red roses to every passing women behind the wheels and educated them about traffic rules and regulations, while also exhorting  them to pass it to their peers, friends and family members.

The team Itanagar was supervised by Capital SP Sagar Singh Kalsi, OC Tabi Bage and other officers of  Women PS  while at Naharlagun, the team was led by SDPO Make Bui, OC Nikom Riba and others. OC Kiksi Yangfo with support of IMC Councillors and PRI members carried out the floral distribution drive at Bandardewa.

Itanagar based NGO United Charity celebrated the day here at Siddhartha Hall on Thursday. The celebration was organized with the effort to highlight about the high prevalence of Breast Cancer in the state with the theme-“Don’t be shy; don’t be afraid. Let’s be aware of Breast Cancer.

Addressing the gathering, Minister for Food & Civil Supply, WRD, Geology & Mining,  Kamlung Mossang stressed on peoples participation and collective effort from every corner of society to fight breast cancer.  While appreciating UC and state Cancer Society, he added  It is because of the negligence and shyness  to communicate with elders and parents, the cancer which can be cured in the early stage gets worse, he said.

Senior Radiologist & Oncologist, Dr Sam Tsering in his power point presentation briefed on various stages of breast cancer. It is very rare to find cases where girls below 20 years are affected by breast cancer. But it does not mean it can’t happen there is cure for every type of cancer but at an early stage. He asked the girls to be bold and not be shy to approach doctors in case of any sign of cancer, he said.
