TEZU, Feb 8:Governor BD Mishra while expressing deep concern about opium cultivation and drug addiction asserted that drug abuse is destroying the whole society. He called for multipronged action against this social menace, including destroying opium plants, action against people involved in drug trafficking and also opportunity for alternate livelihood.
He emphasised that there must be social intensity and every member of the society must involve in the eradication of drug menace. He said this at a public meeting at Tezu, the District Headquarters of Lohit District today.
The Governor called upon the Gaon Burahs, Panchayat members and public leaders to cooperate with the district administration, police and Central Bureau of Narcotics to control and destroy opium cultivation.
He also asked for people’s participation to ensure that welfare schemes are implemented properly.
In his meeting with district Heads of Department, the Governor advised them to involve the common people in the implementation process so that there is absolute transparency and accountability. Stating that Government officials are the pillar of Society, the Governor emphasised that they must work with probity and rectitude.
Deputy Commissioner Karma Leki briefed the Governor about centrally and State sponsored programmes and projects in the District.
Immediately upon reaching Tezu, the Governor visited the Indira Gandhi Government College, Tezu and interacted with faculty and students. In his address to the students and faculty, the Governor said that as students, academics must be their priority and they must utilize the opportunities they have. He exhorted the girl students to prepare themselves so as to shoulder equal responsibilities as their male counterpart.
The Governor also advised the members of the faculty to recognize the merit of the students, impart latest knowledge in their subjects and treat their students as an extended family.
The Governor accompanied by the First Lady of the State also visited the Zonal General Hospital, Tezu, interacted with indoor patients and distributed fruits to them. They also interacted with the inmates of the drug De-addiction Centre.
Earlier, on their arrival at Tezu, the Governor and the First Lady of the State were accorded traditional reception. Dr. Mohesh Chai, Minister Animal Husbandry, Veterinary, Dairy Development, Research and Art & Culture, Smti Dasanglu Pul, chairperson, Arunachal Pradesh Mineral Development and Trading Corporation Limited (APMDTCL), Lohit Deputy Commissioner Karma Leki, Senior Superintendent of Police Isaac Pertin, were present on the occasion amongst others.
