BOMDILA, Jun 2: District headquarters Bomdila, a famous tourist hub with population of 12,000 plus is facing severe water crisis for last 5-6 months.  The condition is so grave that each household general gets hardly few minutes of water supply in 24 hours.  Peeved over the situation, residents are now planning to stage a Dharna. However an even bigger concern looms for the administration and the community here as reportedly the water source feeding the town is drying up.

Against this backdrop, Deputy Commissioner West Kameng, Dr. Sonal Swaroop along with EE (PHED) Er. Likha Tekhi, DDSE, EE Hydro-Power and EE Power, braving inclement weather conditions on Friday visited the source of water supply.

The team was surprised to see two very thin streams of water flowing in the collecting chamber despite the heavy downpour. The only gravity water supply source for Bomdila Township is located at Banglejap ridge near Mandala top.  There are four sources with provision of collection chamber at source No.4 from which entire water is despatch to Bomdila using 200 mm diameter DI Pipes as conveyance.  Since recent past, the discharges at all four sources are diminishing and source No.1 has dried up.  The main supply line which is 40 Km away from Bomdila has 4(four) inlet sources from which entire water is despatched to Bomdila using 200 MM diameter DI Pipes.

The main reason for diminishing water flow has been attributed to widespread rampant felling of trees resulting in deforestation in the catchment area.  After verification on the spot, the DC instructed the EE to immediately fence the catchment area, plan afforestation with the help of DFO and community and most importantly  identify alternative sources of water supply  for the district headquarters and relaying of distribution channel in entire town.
