IITANAGAR, May 22:   In a sensational and daring criminal act ,  two unidentified persons entered the office chamber of Director, Audit & Pension (DAP), Md. Abdul Basit with sophisticated weapon suspected to be anAK-56,  a Chinese made variant of the AK-47 assault rifle and a hand grenade here today at D-sector, Naharlagun.

The incident took place Monday afternoon when the two unidentified persons entered the office of the official and tried to fire at him.

When contacted, Basit informed this daily, ‘Two unidentified youths entered my office cabin at around 12.50 hrs with a bag and closed the door of my chamber with my PA in the adjoining cabin.  For a moment I was confused about what was going on. But when I realized something was amiss, the person started asking me something and put his hand inside the bag, to pull out guns from the bag he was carrying.’

 However showing presence of mind and bravery, the officer caught hold of the AK-56 from the other side and started shouting for help during which he sustained injuries in his right elbow. Moreover when the assailants failed to suppress the officer they ran out from the chamber leaving behind the gun and a hand grenade.

When asked if he earlier received any threat or intimidation from someone, Basit replied in the negative  but did say that he had received few calls and messages on Sunday last, which he thinks may be related to the attack.

 ‘I am taking care of the Directorate of Audit & Pension, which deals with pension issues and not with constructions or other works department. I never expected that such an incident will happen to me. I have been discharging my office duties with responsibility and I am confused about this particular incident,’ Basit further added.

The official further expressed gratitude to the police for providing him with personal security.

 Meanwhile a case have been registered as per FIR received at Naharlagun PS vide Case No 69/17 u/s-447/506 IPC read with 27 Arms act and matter is under investigation and information is being collected by police, sources said.

 Giving more update on the incident, Inspector General of Police, Taba Tussar informed that hunt is on to nab the assailants and police is confident of indentifying both the accused. When asked about the make of the assault rifle, he asserted that the gun is a variant of the AK-47 and is in functional condition. Some live rounds of ammunition was also lodged in the rifle, the IGP informed.

Taba, also added that initially cases of Arms Act and attempt to robbery will definitely be registered against the criminals. However after proper investigation more cases are likely to be added later on, he added.      

Meanwhile, condemning the broad daylight attempt on the life of Director, Audit & Pension Md. Abdul Bashit, the Confederation of Service Associations of Arunachal Pradesh (CoSAAP) has urged the home department to nab the criminals immediately and conduct thorough investigation to unearth the motive behind the attempt to the life of a senior sincere officer. It further urged to provide immediate security to the Director, Audit & Pension in the office and residence.

CM directs DGP to make prompt arrests

 BENGALURU, May 22:​Shocked and expressing deep concern over the assault on Director, Audit & Pension, Chief Minister Pema Khandu who is currently at Bengaluru directed the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to pursue the matter and bring it to a logical conclusion as it poses serious threat to the security of the state as well as common people.

While speaking to the duo over telephone, Khandu who is away on tour said that rule of law shall prevail under all circumstances in the state and we will not allow anyone to disrupt the peace of the state. He directed the police chief to nab the culprits immediately and to deal with strictly as per law.

“Government will ensure safety of all the citizens of the state and especially the government servants, so that they can fearlessly discharge their duties of public service. Lawlessness, intimidation or use of force for any purpose will never be tolerated,” CM assertively said. 

 He issued directives to the DGP to conduct massive manhunt to nab the perpetrators and award them exemplary punishment. ‘Safety and security of citizens should not be compromised,’ said the CM while directing the police department to beef up security measures in the state so that the common people continue to have faith on law and order and security system of the state.
