In the last few years, hate propaganda has become an unfortunate part of public discourse. While moderates might sweep it under the rug calling it the affliction of few within a vast majority, but the vehemence and frequency of hate speeches out in public domain is scary and might get out of hand, if decisive steps are not taken.
For a nation which has now become used to toxic inflammatory and provocative speeches ,  Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu speaking out against hate speech is much appreciated. Naidu said that it goes against the country's culture, Constitution and ethos and that "every person has the right to practise and preach his or her faith".
This comes close at the heels of five former chiefs of the armed forces and a number of other prominent citizens including bureaucrats writing a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the recent incidents of hate speeches urging them to take appropriate measures.
The prevailing atmosphere of religious intolerance is shocking to witness in a country which till recently took pride for its tolerance and unity in diversity. As utterly condemnable as hate speeches are, the lack of definitive action further bolsters perpetrators.
Hate speech and inciting violence against other religious communities must be tackled as a heinous crime. The Constitution has given every person the right to practise and preach his or her faith but not to abuse others and incite violence. Those occupying positions of power and high offices especially the Prime Minister and President must speak out against this. The political leadership must denounce such acts and affirm that it stands by the constitutional values of secularism, religious tolerance and rule of law.
