The Pema Khandu led state government has announced Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Swalamban Yojana (DDUSY) under which local entrepreneurs can avail bank loan ranging from Rs 10 lakhs to 1 crore with 30% subsidy. This move comes at a time when Arunachal is facing the initial lashings of unemployment among its youth. Needless to say this initiative is a God-send for educated as well as uneducated youths willing to be self-employed.

Thanks to the push by the Centre, start-ups are now the ‘it’ thing. While not too long along, government service was the most sought after, slowly the concept of ‘entrepreneur’ is also gaining a foothold in society. Many youngsters are keen to be their own boss provided the initial funds can be managed. Therefore, the DDUSY will prove a boon and trigger more to venture in the field of self-employment.

On a practical note, employment in government sector for all is absolutely impossible given the fact that there is limited space for job creation at least now. The only way to curb the growing problem is for the youth to turn entrepreneurs so that they become producers and employment generators as well. Venturing into new arenas will help ensure productive engagements with simultaneous livelihood generation.

Call centres, retail and hospitality industry in metro cities are powered by a large number of migrants from Northeastern states. Why is it that our youths known for their professionalism elsewhere cringe away at the mere thought of working in private set up back home?

Instead of waiting for a stroke of luck; Why not start a business, turn entrepreneur and generate employment opportunities for others as well.

The problem of unemployment can be solved with concerted efforts from both sides – the state as well as the general public. Requirement is for people to think out-of-the-box and not always follow the beaten path. The answer to the unemployment problem largely lies in our mindset, as to how we perceive “dignity of labour”. In states like Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram, the locals -- educated or not -- show no hesitation to work in any field of work right from selling vegetables to running a fast food joint. Time has come for us as a state to also change our notions and realize the true meaning of dignity of labour.
