Itanagar, Jul 1: Church of God World Mission Society held a 'Plastic Footprint' Removal Campaign’ in between Barapani and Mithun Gate, A-Sector in Naharlagun on June 30 last.
Through the campaign, the organisation collects and separates plastics flowing into the ocean and rivers to prevent ecological pollution and raise awareness to reduce unnecessary plastic consumption. As environmental pollution caused by plastic waste becomes increasingly serious, threatening the coexistence of nature and humanity, this climate change response activity based on the local community is receiving positive reviews. This campaign is part of the 'Global Hope Challenge' that the Church of God is carrying out on a global scale to commemorate the 60th anniversary of its establishment, and is being dynamically carried out in Korea, the United States, Argentina, Peru, Korea, Mongolia,South Africa, and other countries around the world to commemorate World Environment Day.
More than a hundred volunteers collected around 350 kgs of plastic waste, including water bottles, straws, cups, plastic bags, and food wrappers and more than 4,500 kgs of other garbage around a 1.5 km area. The Itanagar Municipal Cooperation (IMC), Papum Pare actively cooperated with the voluntary actions of believers to protect the environment by providing shovels, gloves, masks, brooms and garbage collection vehicles.
Councillor of Ward No. 16, Tarh Acak visited the site in person and greeted the volunteers with words of appreciation and encouragement.
He emphasised the need to make Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) pollution free and appealed other churches and organisations to take initiatives for such noble cause. He added that without the active support and participation of the public at grassroot level there can be no change or development.
A panel exhibition was held to inform people about the harmful effects of plastic and the importance of erasing plastic footprints.
