Itanagar, July 4: Dr Sukamal Deb, a former Arunachal Pradesh official has been conferred the global award “sustainable development hero” at the prestigious BMICH, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Dr Deshapriya S Wijtetunge, Ambassador of Peace, Director General, Sri Lanka United Nations Friendship Organisation (SUNFO), Colombo, Sri Lanka, conveyed their decision to confer the Award upon Dr Sukamal Deb, Lead, Anant Centre for Development and Documentation of Crafts (ACDC), Anant National University, Ahmedabad. 
Dr Deb served the Arunachal Pradesh Government for over three decades and was CEO of Arunachal Pradesh Khadi & Village Industries Board before he left the State, rendering VRS. From 2017 to 2022, he served KVIC, the Ministry of MSME, Governmentof India as the Head of the North East Region. He rendered yeoman services to the NER and the State of Arunachal Pradesh. Among many others, he was the person behind the revival of Monpa Handmade Paper at Tawang, which received national and global appreciation. As Regional Head of KVIC, he took several path-breaking and innovative initiatives, including mainstreaming back with the surrendered militants, especially the women cadre in Assam. KVIC created new employment during his tenure, surpassing all their previous records.   
SUNFO is a non-political, non-racial and non-sectarian organisation working for peace, harmony and well-being of mankind according to the principles of the UN, founded on 22 May 1999.
In his speech, Dr Deb shared his experience of working with the poor, women, tribal people, and youths of the North East Region, India, and why the Region lives in his heart. Dwelling upon the issue of tribal development, he explained his work in Arunachal Pradesh and his motivation for an anthropological study about the people of the State that culminated in his Doctorate degree.
