DOIMUKH, Oct 7 : The Arunachal Pradesh Information Commission (APIC), in collaboration with the Department of Law, Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), convened a workshop on "RTI as a Tool for Governance" at the Mini Auditorium ofRGU on Tuesday as part of the RTI Week Celebration 2026.
Sponsored by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Government of India, the workshop sought to deepen public understanding of the Right to Information Act, 2005, and its significance in fostering transparency, institutional accountability and participatory governance.
The programme brought together students of the Department of Law and participants from various departments of the university.
State Information Commissioners Vijay Taram and Dani Gamboo, along with Sode Potom, APCS, Secretary-cum-Registrar, APIC, and Pricilla Tayeng, Deputy Registrar, APIC were the resource persons. The university was represented by Prof. S.K.Nayak Vice Chancellor(In Charge); Dr. Samir Bhadury, HoD, Department of Law and Coordinator of the programme and Dr. Topi Basar, Dean, Department of Law.
In their keynote addresses and presentations, the Information Commissioners underscored that RTI extends beyond the mere retrieval of official information, serving instead as a vital democratic instrument through which citizens can scrutinise public institutions, seek accountability and participate more substantively in governance. They emphasised the importance of understanding the scope and potential of the Act, particularly among young citizens, to ensure that this significant democratic right is exercised responsibly, effectively and in accordance with its larger objective of strengthening public accountability.
A practical presentation on the procedure for filing an RTI application was also conducted, acquainting participants with the process of seeking information from public authorities. This was followed by an interactive session, during which students and participants engaged with the Information Commissioners on the practical scope and application of the Act.
The Right to lnformation Act, 2005, came fully into force on October 12,2005, establishing a statutory framework through which citizens can seek information from public authorities.
The RTI Week celebration seeks to broaden awareness of this fundamental democratic instrument and encourage its informed and responsible use towards greater transparency, accountability and responsive governance.
