DOIMUKH/SOPO, Dec 30:  As the New Year's Eve festivities approach, the Forest Department has heightened vigilance to curb the killing of wild animals and prevent wildlife smuggling. In a recent operation at Sopo under Doimukh circle of Papumpare district, the department seized various types of wild meat which included wild pigeons, deer and other birds, during stringent checks.
The Range Forest Officer of Banderdewa Forest Division Taje Dupit, while speaking to the media stated that the intensified checking is routine, but in light of the upcoming celebrations, special measures have been implemented. The objective is to dissuade individuals from engaging in illegal activities related to wildlife, he said.
So far, no one has come forward to claim ownership of the seized wild meat, leading to no immediate arrests. Dupit assured that all confiscated items would undergo proper documentation and be disposed off transparently in front of cameras.
Dupit, further appealed to the public, urging them not to harm or kill wild animals. He emphasized that anyone found involved in the killing of wild animals would be prosecuted under specific sections of the Wildlife Protection Act.
"As the Forest Department remains on high alert, residents are reminded to celebrate responsibly and respect the region's diverse wildlife, contributing to the preservation of the local ecosystem," added the RFO.
