Itanagar, Dec 21:  As part of the Good Governance Week, the Deputy Commissioner Capital Itanagar, Talo Potom along with State Nodal Officer Narcotics Control Board, Oli Koyu and DDSE ICC, ST Zara visited Govt Higher Schools at Ganga village, Arunodaya and Itanagar and briefed about various initiatives undertaken by the government for the overall development of the state.
The team also carried out awareness on the menace of drugs and why it is important to put a stop to it. The DC said that it is necessary to identify drug addicts and requested concerned members of the Itanagar Municipal Corporation including those from the health sector and police to work along this line.
The DC requested the students also to identify the addicts and those involved with drugs and inform the same to him, so that necessary measures can be taken to stop the menace of drugs. As a social responsibility, everyone should come forward and contribute their share in controlling the growing numbers of drug addicts, Potom said. "By identifying such cases, proper counselling can be provided and rehabilitation if required so that we can stop others from getting trapped in the web of drug addiction," the DC said.
Koyu while throwing light on the programs and policies of the government to control the menace of drugs, said that social acceptance of a drug addict is the most important thing to help a person recover. He also urged all to check illegal cultivation of opium, cannabis etc., as a social responsibility and underscored that community mobilisation is the most important  tool  against drug addiction.
"Also, the stigma attached with a drug addict always comes in the way of recovery as seen with the high percentage of relapse," Koyu said while urging parents and guardians to move beyond the stigma and provide all the required support to those under rehabilitation or recovery.
He highlighted that even successful countries like US and UK have less than 25% recovery rates and hence a coordinated effort is required to fight the drug menace.
The DDSE also urged the students to be responsible citizens and said concerted effort from everyone is required to stop the menace of drugs.
