ITANAGAR, Sep 2:  The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest rally in Itanagar against what it described as caste discrimination and untouchability, while demanding the withdrawal of the FIR registered against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
The protest rally began from Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan and proceeded towards the Civil Secretariat, with Congress workers raising slogans including “Rahul Gandhi Zindabad,” “Loktantra Zindabad,” “Fake FIR Nahi Chalega” and “FIR ka khel nahi chalega.”
Addressing the gathering, APCC Vice President (Media) Mina Toko questioned whether caste discrimination and untouchability still exist in 21st-century India. She stressed the need to protect the dignity, equality and representation of Dalit, tribal and other socially marginalised communities.
Toko alleged that following Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s visit to Haldwani, Uttarakhand, members associated with Shri Ram Sena and Dharmatmak Seva Nyas conducted a “purification yajna” linked to his visit.
The APCC strongly objected to the alleged ritual and said Rahul Gandhi had raised his voice against it while demanding justice and an apology for Kharge. The party alleged that an FIR was subsequently registered against Gandhi and described it as an attempt to intimidate the opposition.
Congress leaders further claimed that Kharge’s speech focused on employment, recruitment, youth empowerment, development and social issues, and questioned how his concluding words, “Jai Hind, Jai Uttarakhand,” could be construed as religiously divisive.
The APCC demanded immediate withdrawal of the FIR against Rahul Gandhi and called for appropriate legal action against those allegedly involved in the “purification” ritual.
