LAPTANG VILLAGE, Nov 7: On the occasion of the Chalo Loku Festival of Laptang Village, Dr. Chalit Sumnyan, Assistant Professor of History at Wangcha Rajkumar Government College, Deomali, launched two books.
The two publications, Administrative Evolution in Tirap District of Arunachal Pradesh (1826–1987) and Cultural Exploration of Traditional Handicrafts of the Noctes of Tirap District, explore important aspects of the region's administrative history, indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage.
The first book traces the evolution of administrative institutions and governance in Arunachal Pradesh, particularly Tirap District, from the colonial period to the post-Independence era. It also documents the tribes inhabiting the region before the bifurcation of Changlang District in 1987, along with the development of key sectors such as education, health, transportation and communication.
The second book documents the traditional handicrafts of the Nocte community, exploring objects made using locally available materials such as bamboo, cane, mud, beads and wood. Beyond their practical utility, the publication highlights their cultural significance, traditional craftsmanship and the intergenerational knowledge passed down through oral traditions. The research draws upon interviews, photographs and secondary sources.
The programme was attended by Matdan Matey, Gaon Bura of Old Laptang Village, and Er. Sumnyak Sumnyan, former Chief Engineer (Highways), along with members of the author's family and well-wishers.
Through these publications, Dr. Sumnyan contributes to documenting the historical evolution, indigenous traditions and cultural knowledge of the Nocte community, providing valuable material for future researchers, scholars and readers interested in the history and heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.
