ITANAGAR, Nov 4 : The Public Rights Action Committee (PRAC) has officially called off its 12-hour Capital Bandh after announcing progress on its three-point demands, including the release of detained individuals and improvements in road and healthcare infrastructure.
The bandh had a significant impact across the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR), with normal activities affected during the shutdown. Markets, business establishments and commercial activities remained affected, while the movement of vehicles and daily commuters was disrupted. The bandh also affected the routine activities of residents across the capital region.
Addressing the media PRAC Chairman Takam Sonia said the committee had received a communication from the government regarding its first demand, which concerns the ongoing issue surrounding the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP). He said the government had reportedly initiated discussions with the Siang Indigenous Peoples Forum (SIPF), which is expected to constitute a committee within two days to hold further discussions with the state government on the project.
Sonia said PRAC had agreed to allow the SIPF to take the matter forward, considering that the organisation had taken responsibility for addressing the issue.
Regarding the remaining two demands concerning road connectivity and healthcare facilities, Sonia said the government had invited the PRAC delegation for a meeting scheduled for Wednesday. However, he made it clear that the committee would not compromise on these demands and would firmly place its concerns before the government.
He also clarified that the committee's decision should not create confusion among the Adi community and residents of the Siang belt, reiterating that PRAC remained committed to its demands.
The PRAC chairman credited the support of various organisations, political parties, student bodies, NGOs and youth groups, including Youth for Change, for contributing to the success of the bandh.
He further warned that if the detained individuals were not released within the expected timeframe, PRAC would be ready to extend its support to the SIPF and other organisations if requested.
Meanwhile, Sonia expressed regret and apologised on behalf of the committee if any organisation, student body or individual felt hurt by remarks made during the bandh campaign. He specifically acknowledged various community-based organisations and student organisations for their support.
