YINGKIONG / PASIGHAT Nov 2: A 36-hour bandh called by the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF) and the SUMP Affected Area Youth Association (SAAYA) has begun in Upper Siang district amid tight security arrangements, with various organisations extending their support to the shutdown in neighbouring East Siang district.
The bandh, scheduled for November 2 and 3, is being observed in protest against the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), with protesters continuing to press for the withdrawal of the mega dam project, withdrawal of central armed police force )CAPF), release of all arrested persons and raising concerns over SUMP’s potential impact on indigenous communities, ancestral land and the environment.
Meanwhile, various organisations in East Siang have reportedly extended support to the bandh, reflecting growing solidarity with the anti-SUMP movement across the Siang region.
As per reports, the mobile network services in parts of the affected area in Upper Siang  have reportedly been suspended, although the reason behind the alleged disruption could not be independently confirmed.
The bandh is being observed under heightened security deployment, with authorities maintaining a close watch on the situation to prevent any untoward incidents.
The shutdown comes amid escalating opposition to the proposed hydropower project and continuing demands from affected communities for the government to reconsider the project and initiate dialogue with stakeholders.
