GEKU, Nov 4: The Adi-Galo Welfare Society (AGWS) on Wednesday began its 357 kilometres long foot march from Geku to Itanagar, raising concerns and pressing for action on issues surrounding the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) in Arunachal Pradesh.
The march, which commenced at 8:00 AM, was led by AGWS President Geyi Bagra and Spokesperson Karge Basar. Through the initiative, the society sought to draw the attention of the state government towards the concerns and demands of communities potentially affected by the proposed mega dam project.
During the march, AGWS reiterated its four key demands, including the immediate and unconditional release of all persons detained in connection with SUMP-related issues, and the initiation of immediate peace talks with community based organisations (CBOs) and society representatives before any dam construction begins.
The society also demanded the immediate revocation of suspension orders issued against Head Gaon Burahs (HGBs), Gaon Burahs (GBs) and government employees in connection with the SUMP issue. It further called for the withdrawal of paramilitary forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) from SUMP-affected villages.
AGWS maintained that dialogue and peaceful engagement are essential to addressing the concerns of affected communities. The march is aimed at ensuring that the voices, rights and demands of local people are heard and considered in the decision-making process concerning the proposed project.
