RONO HILLS, Aug 5:   

Directorate of Field Publicity (DFP), Ministry of I & B, Government of India, Itanagar today organized an awareness programme on handlooms at Rajiv Gandhi University. The main objective of the programme was to sensitize the students about handloom industry and its role in socio-economic development of the country.

 

Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tamo Mibang, said that the handloom industry has great potential to increase income of weavers besides providing self employment. He appreciated entrepreneurs working in handlooms sector and also opined that the handloom awareness drive is a part of the country-wide special campaign in 70 educational institutions.

 

Speaking as resource person, Assistant Director, RDC, Doimukh, K Pertin highlighted different schemes available in the Textile and Handicraft department in promoting the importance of handloom and khadi and also developed design which match with the latest fashion. She also urged the youths of present generation to adopt using of Handlooms and Khadi in their traditional dresses.

 

Moyir Riba, Director In-charge, Institute of Distance Education, RGU said that people should come forward and avail training facilities in designing, weaving etc. She appealed the students present in the function to wear local traditional dress at least once a week. She further requested to the Government for setting-up of Weaving Service Centre in the state of Arunuchal Pradesh.

 

Prof. Amitabh Mitra, Registrar, RGU, Doimukh emphasized about the important of India Handloom Industries and said that handloom is the 2nd largest industry proving employment especially in the rural areas. He also pointed out that about 4.3 crore people involved in the handloom industries across the country.

 

        Artists from Song & Drama Division also performed dance as well as drama during the programme. Quiz competition, Photo exhibition were other activities of daylong event.
