ITANAGAR, Oct 28:

The Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Itanagar, in association with Vivekananda Study Circle Naharlagun,  organized a daylong programme at Vivekananda Hall,Itanagar, to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Sister Nivedita on Saturday. "Sister Nivedita, born on October 28, 1867 as Margaret Noble, was an Irish author and teacher. She was Swami Vivekananda's disciple and made India her home.


The Vivekananda Study Circle and Vivekananda Centre of Human Excellence has planned year-long academic activities among the school students in her honour and will host various programmes throughout the year. The inaugural programme on October 28 was attended by 117 participants from different educational intuitions of Itanagar.

Sister Nivedita left her homeland and arrived in India at Swami Vivekananda's behest. Her contribution to India's freedom struggle is also notable. She was a champion of women's education. Sister Nivedita met Swami Vivekananda in 1895 in London and travelled to Calcutta in 1898. Vivekananda initiated her into the vow of Brahmacharya on March 25, 1898. She was very close to Sarada Devi, wife of Sri Ramakrishna. Sister Nivedita passed away in Darjeeling on October 13, 1911.

 

The keynote address in the function was delivered by Swami Pradiptanandaji Maharaj, Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Itanagar and the Preseidential address was delivered by Swami Sargavanandaji Maharaj of RKM, Lumdung(near Seppa), East Kameng District.
