ITANAGAR, Jun 14: It feels good to be home, to be among my people after a gap of two months, an elated Anshu Jamshenpa said, who on Wednesday was accorded a befitting reception on her homecoming by the department of Sports and Youth Affairs here.

Anshu, a mother of two, who hails from Bomdila, the headquarters of West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh on May 22 last became the world’s first woman to scale Mt Everest twice in five days. The ace mountaineer’s double ascent of the world’s highest peak was her fifth overall, and the second after May 16.

Thanking all her supporters, well wishers and sponsors for all the support and prayers, Anshu termed her double ascent of Mt Everest as a much anticipated one, but something which took a long time coming.

My journey this time was a blessed one, as His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama had flagged of the expedition from Guwahati on April 02. Though there were a few hurdles, but thanks to the blessings of His Holiness and my well wishers I could finally accomplish my goal which has given me sleepless nights since 2014, said Anshu.

Addressing the school children in particular who were present in the function, she added that there were many people who tried to demotivate her but she did not lose hope.

Don’t be discouraged and focus on your goals as nothing is impossible, the mountaineer said.

Anshu was of the opinion that if the state government comes up with a mountaineering policy, then Arunachal Pradesh would go a long way in earning a lot of revenue.

Arunachal has loads of virgin mountains which has the potential to attract tourists and adventure enthusiasts from across the globe, she asserted.

Parliamentary Secretary for Sports and Youth Affairs, Nyamar Karbak, under whose supervision the function was organized, said that the people of Arunachal Pradesh will always be grateful towards Anshu for her achievement and for highlighting the state’s name in the international arena.

“You (Anshu) are our asset and the feat that you have pulled off is not only special, but at the same time commendable beyond words,” said Karbak further calling upon the youths, especially girls to take the Everester as a role model.

Taking opportunity, Karbak also disclosed that there are almost 200 vacant posts in the police department and preference would be given to sportspersons for the same.

Earlier, sports and youth affairs secretary, Dani Sulu, also termed Anshu’s achievement as a proud moment for the country and the Arunachalees in particular.

Anshu’s grit and determination shows how focused she was to achieved her goal and this is something which only special persons can attain, the secretary said assuring full support from his department’s end for her future endeavours.

Arunachal’s first mountaineer, Tapi Mara, in his short speech appealed the government and authorities concerned to sincerely promote adventure sports and tourism in state and at the same time also support the other Everesters whose name has been forgotten with time.

Anshu’s husband and All Arunachal Pradesh Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Association (AAPM&ASA) president Tsering Wange informed that they have submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his help formulating a national sports policy for mountaineering and adventure sports in India.

We have also sought the Prime Minister’s help in setting up an adventure sports institute in Bomdila in Arunachal Pradesh, informed Wage.

Prime Minister Modi had on June 05 last flagged in the double ascent expedition of Anshu at his office in New Delhi.
