NAHARLAGUN,Aug 27: A ₹2.40 crore alleged fraud linked to the release of a pending PMGSY payment has come under the scanner of Naharlagun Police, with investigators uncovering an alleged racket involving claims of government connections and a forged payment-release letter.

Superintendent of Police, Naharlagun, Nyelam Nega, revealed the details during a press briefing on Naharlagun Police Station Case No. 123/2025, registered in connection with the alleged cheating.

According to the SP, the complainant had a pending PMGSY bill of more than ₹17 crore. The accused allegedly claimed that the payment could be released through their contacts and influence within the government machinery.

For facilitating the payment, the complainant was allegedly asked to pay approximately ₹2.40 crore and the money was allegedly paid.

A letter was subsequently handed over to the complainant, purportedly showing that the pending payment had been released. However, when the document was taken to the Chief Engineer's Office, RWD, for verification, authorities allegedly discovered that the letter was fake.

Following the investigation, a police team travelled to Guwahati and arrested the alleged key accused Rakesh Kumar Singh. He was subsequently brought back for further investigation and has been granted six days of police custody.

The SP said the investigation is aimed at establishing the complete facts, identifying the role of each individual involved and tracing the circumstances surrounding the alleged transaction.

SP Nyelam Nega urged contractors and members of the public to verify such claims directly with the concerned government department before handing over any money.

He cautioned that people can easily become victims when they place blind trust in individuals claiming to have official connections.
