ZIRO, Mar 11: A meeting cum workshop was organized on the theme “Medicinal Plants of Ziro Valley” here on Thursday, to raise awareness on medicinal plants and also to link the traditional knowledge about such plants to scientific knowledge. Most of the medicinal plants are threatened because of forest degradation and needs conservation being rare species.
The workshop was organized by Dr. Millo Ankha, Artist and a writer from Ziro in collaboration with Hapoli Forest Division. Dr. Ankha gave a presentation about the traditional usage of the medicinal plants in treating various ailments.
The Pakke Declaration, 2047 is a novel step which the Arunachal Government has taken for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Under the theme of  climate resilient forestry under the Declaration, the aim is to make existing forestry practices more resilient to climate change. One of the targets in the theme is to protect the rare and endangered species and plants which exist in the state. The Declaration also talks about developing alternate livelihood measures for forest fringe communities, Ankha said.
Speaking on the occasion, the DFO Abhinav Kumar mentioned that one of the effective ways to create livelihood is sustainable extraction of NTFP (non timber forest products) which includes various medicinal plants. If done properly they can bring in livelihood options to people, he said. 
He further mentioned that growing and commercialisation of medicinal plants by collaboration with ayurvedic product manufacturers would be a good alternative to conserve natural forest while earning an income for the local people.
The department plans to conduct more such awareness camps in Lower Subansiri and Kamle districts in the future.
The meeting was attended by the several Gaon Buras and Gaon Buris, along with representatives of Apatani Women Association of Ziro, and Ngunu Ziro, a local NGO working on various conservation initiatives and students of St. Claret College.
