DUMPORIJO, Aug 30: Setting an example of encouraging education at the grassroots level that is worth emulating, the villagers of Giteripa Circle and Bely Biyak Dere Youth Association (BBDYA) have renovated the Government Upper Primary School Beyak which had been lying defunct for last many years.
Speaking to this reporter, Adviser-BBDYA Nakek Bage informed that the said  school was established in 1982 as an Inter Village School to cater to the primary education needs of at least 22 villages under Giteripa Circle, but had been lying in tatters for the last six years. “It was the lone school for the entire Circle, but today it is non-functional because of zero enrolment. All the infrastructure of the school have got damaged slowly and even many teachers’ quarters have collapsed and the school is now dilapidated,” Bage lamented.
He further disclosed that in the entire Circle there are no active government schools and students have to travel at least 15 km from their village to Dumporijo. “As per government records, there are schools and teachers in the Circle, but in reality nothing such exists,” he claimed.
In view of the hardships faced by the students and to make sure the students are not deprived of education, the villagers and BBDYA under the supervision of District Project Coordinator (DPC) Talu Yudik started to renovate the school during the lockdown period. “Maintaining all SOPs, we have started renovation works from March 26 last and completed it on August 23,” the BBDYA Adviser informed, also detailing that besides restoring water and electricity connectivity, hostel, kitchen, school fencing, toilets as well as the desk and benches have been renovated. "To encourage the students, we have enrolled at least 50 of them as of now without fees," he revealed.  Meanwhile, the BBDYA  has appealed to Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Minister for  Education Taba Tedir, local MLA Rode Bui, Director of Elementary Education and the Secretary Education to focus on such remote schools to bring overall improvement in the state’s education sector. Earlier, on August 23, villagers and BBDYA organized a re-launch ceremony and the school’s first-ever parent-teacher meet was conducted in presence of the DPC as chief guest.

During the meeting, under the guidance of the Headmaster, rules and regulations were framed for smooth functioning of the school in all respects.
