ITANAGAR, Feb 1: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein and chief secretary Naresh Kumar flagged off 28 sanitation vehicles of the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) in presence of Mayor Tame Phassang, Corporators and others on Tuesday at IG Park. The newly procured sanitation vehicles aims to provide better sanitation services in Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).
While congratulating and lauding the efforts of the corporation, Mein said that the procurement of the new sanitation vehicles will help to reduce the challenges faced earlier by the IMC to properly manage waste in the capital region.
While referring to smart cities of Itanagar and Pasighat, he said that IMC and PMC need to give special attention to meet up the challenges of solid waste management.
"Plastic waste has emerged as a serious threat to the environment and the need of the hour is to take effective measures to manage the plastic waste in the state," the deputy chief minister said.
Stressing on the importance of public participation in waste management, he said that awareness generation is vital in bringing about behavioural change.
He informed that the state government under the able leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu will provide all necessary support to IMC, PMC and panchayats in waste management, but the corporations have to be ready to accept the challenges to manage the waste in the state. Mein suggested the  officials to submit the required budget to the Department so that it will be incorporated in the ensuing Budget session.
Speaking to the media, Mayor informed that proposal for more vehicles is in the pipeline. He asserted that problems related to the unavailability of vehicles in various wards will now be solved. Earlier, one vehicle had to visit two-three wards to collect garbage but now two or three vehicles will visit a single ward in a day.
He further requested the denizens not to throw garbage in open spaces but to collect it in designated places or hand it over to the sanitation workers in the morning.
Phassang also expressed gratitude to the state government for its support in procuring the vehicles. He also informed that the state government has assured to enhance the Grant-in-Aid to IMC from Rs 1.78 crore to Rs 6 Crore, adding that it will help the Corporation work more efficiently.
Mayor also informed that to dispose of the garbage, Solid Waste Management plants are being established in Karsingsa and Chimpu. Moreover, he appealed to the denizens for support to make the state capital region clean.
