ITANAGAR, Jul 24:The Capital Complex Police on Tuesday arrested two leaders of the Students’ Union Movement of All Arunachal (SUMAA) under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 2014. The arrested leaders are its General Secretary Suraj Ligu and Convener Tarh Rikham.

The arrests came in the wake of the recent SUMAA movement against Tibetan refugees at Bomdila in West Kameng. SUMAA is currently spearheading a movement against Tibetan refugees having permanent structures outside their designated settlement areas including fake trading licenses, permanent residential certificates and scheduled tribe certificates beside Refugee cards in West Kameng district. 

When contacted, Superintendent of Police Capital, Harsh Vardhan confirmed the arrest of the duo and informed that they have been arrested under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 2014.

The Capital SP also informed that an extortion case is also registered against SUMAA executive members at Naharlagun police station. Both the arrested are lodged in Jully jail, said the SP.

Following the development, hundreds gheraoed the Central Jully Jail and resorted to stone pelting and burned tyres outside the jail gates.

Officer In-charge, Police Station, Itanagar , Tabi Bage said that the mob in hundreds tried to storm the Jully jail, however  were dispersed after CRPF and IRBN personnel intervened.

‘The two arrested leaders were produced before DC Bomdila through a video conferencing and a case has been registered under Arunachal Pradesh Prevention of Unlawful Act against the duo,’ Bage informed adding that they were remanded to 12-day police custody.

Assuring residents, the OC said ‘One platoon of CRPF has been deployed in the area along with IRBN. The atmosphere is peaceful now and residents need not fear as everything is under control.’
