KHONSA, Apr 11:   Pongtu, the main agricultural festival of the Tutsa community was celebrated with traditional gaiety and religious fervor at Khonsa in Tirap district on Tuesday
Gracing the festival at Khonsa as chief guest, Agriculture & DoTCL etc Minister Wangki Lowang appreciated the Tutsa community for preserving and promoting their beautiful culture and colourful costumes and advised to uphold the culture and traditions for posterity. 
 
 Lowang said that Tutsa tribe was bifurcated from Nocte tribes few years ago to get more benefits from government and then the nomenclature  “Tutsa”  has been named based on mother village “Tutnu” as Tutnu is known to be one  of the oldest ancient historical village in Tirap District.
 
 The Minister said that one after another old folk singers and folktale tellers  are dying and with them the age old traditional system which were handed down  by ancestors are also dying. As such he appealed the intellectuals and PhD holders of Tutsas, Noctes and Wanchos to research thoroughly  in what way old folk songs, folk tales and folklore can be preserved, protected and promoted whether in written form or documentary etc. 
Lowang further emphasized to include Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts in tourism circuit which will immensely help the educated unemployed youth  and reduce unemployment problem in the region.
Chief patron of TPFC Wanglam Sawin, 55-Khonsa East MLA cum Chairman APEDA urged the Tutsa community to continue and practice the ancestral culture and traditions which were handed over by forefathers to preserve, protect and promote for posterity. Sawin said that folk songs, folktales and village council led by chieftainship system  which were practiced  by ancestors must be taught to younger generation to continue the footsteps of forefathers but simply drinking wine, eating and dancing doesn’t cover the actual meaning of preservation of  culture and traditions.
While extending  greetings to the Tutsa community, Special Guest Wanglin Lowangdong, MLA-cum-Adviser to CM  appealed the  Tutsas, Wanchos and Noctes  to preserve and promote traditional culture which were taught by forefathers stating that it is the duty of the present generation  to teach their children about their roots.
 
Nampong MLA cum Parl.Sey Legal Metrology   Laisam Simai, guest of honour in his speech said that it is  high time to showcase to the world and promote tourism in the TCL region.
Highlighting the huge potential of natural tourism  also cultural tourism, he called for strengthening originality of rich culture and traditions in the 21st century. 
 
The programme was attended by DC Tirap P.N. Thungon, Commandant Officer 16 Assam Rifles Col. Robin Kumar, Former MLA Kamthok Lowang, ZPC Sontung Lowang among others.
