SHERGAON, Jul 29: In a move to preserve the ‘Sacred grove’ forest, Garung Thuk,a local NGO in collaboration with Village Bio Diversity Management Committee (BMC), Shergaon organised a rejuvenating plantation programme at Zengbu- Sebu Thon, Sacred Grove Shergaon, on Saturday last.
Attending the programme, Research officer, Arunachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board (APBB) Dr. Kenjum Bagra, appreciated the NGO, VBMC and Villagers of Shergaon for maintaining the age-old tradition of keeping close ties with nature and also for keeping traditional conservation methods alive.
Speaking on the occasion, Research Scholar, Department of Forestry, NERIST, Lobsang Tashi Thungon, elaborated on the current status of Sacred Groves across India. He on behalf of the NGO also thanked all the agricultural land owners who gave away their ancestral lands for road construction to save the sacred grove and to cause minimal damage to the forest.
Earlier, the programme was started by offering prayer by Buddhist monk Dombu Tsering Thungon. The Sacred grove has Oak trees as old as three hundred years and being preserved by villagers for last many years . The fallen dried leaves were used for fertilizing and people are allowed to use only the fallen branches as fuel for other purposes.
The program was also attended by SSB Jawans of 73 Battalion SSB Shergaon, village elders, youth and others.
