Itanagar, Feb 27: Oil India Limited (OIL), National Centre for Seismology (NCS) under the aegis of Ministry of Earth Sciences, and Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CES & HS), Government of Arunachal Pradesh inked a tripartite MoU on February 25, at Itanagar to pursue applied earth science related studies in India with a focus on Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast Region.
The MoU puts in place a formal framework for fostering collaboration in the field of applied seismo-geophysical & geological research, in the field of exploration and exploitation of Geothermal Energy and other aspects of earth sciences studies for driving innovation and excellence.
On the occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, based in Goa under the Ministry of Earth Sciences GoI and Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies, an autonomous organization under the Department of Science and Technology, GoAP to take up Glaciers Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) studies and monitoring the melting glaciers as per of Cryosphere studies in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Minister of Earth Sciences, Kiren Rijiju inaugurated the Daporijo Permanent Seismological Observatory, Heliport Aviation Weather Observing System for NE region. He also laid foundation Stone for 2 Doppler Weather Radars for Western and Eastern Arunachal Pradesh that will enable to predict precise weather phenomenon of this hilly state.
Terming the day as “Historic Day for Arunachal Pradesh”, the Union Minister said that the development of scientific infrastructures in this remote area signifying India's commitment towards advancement of science and technology in the country.
It is worth mentioning that the Daporijo Permanent Seismic Station is the 9th Station after Bomdila in Arunachal Pradesh, and is the 160th Station in India. This station will detect and monitor earthquake activities since Arunachal Pradesh falls under active seismic Zone V.
Weather plays vital role for flight operation particularly helicopter services in highly unpredictable weather. The Heliport Observing Weather Station for North East Region has been installed for eleven stations, out of which eight systems are located at Naharlagun, Namsai, Daporijo, Bhalukpong, Roing, Koloriang, Anini and Miao in Arunachal Pradesh, while installed one each at Kohima in Nagaland, Shillong in Meghalaya, Aizawl in Mizoram. These observing system are designed, developed by India Meteorological Department indigenously under Make in India programme.  These stations capture data and convert text weather data to voice and communicates to airborne pilots up to 50 to 100 km range for deciding to land at a particular heliport / airport in every 15 minutes interval.
The signing ceremony was attended by Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of Earth Sciences (MoES), Ministers of Legislative Assembly, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, senior officials of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and C&MD of Oil India Ltd. among other esteemed dignitaries and senior officials from MoES, GoAP, and OIL.
