DOIMUKH, Aug 31:  Showing commendable promptness, Papumpare Police rescued a 10-year-old girl hailing from Sagalee, who was kidnapped by a construction labourer, one Md. Sahidul Islam, 20, from Orang Village, No. 1 Silonibari, Lakhimpur in Assam.

According to report from Superintendent of Police, Papumpare, Tumme Amo on August 30, an FIR was received from the brother of the victim  stating that Islam who was working as a labourer at Government  Higher  Secondary School,  Sagalee kidnapped his minor sister on August  24 last and fled to his village in Assam. 

A Case No. 09/17 U/S 363/376 IPC R/W 6 of POCSO Act 2012 was registered against the accused at Police station, Sagalee.

Acting on a tip off, a rescue team constituted under the supervision of the SP swung into action and rushed to Lakhimpur, Assam on the same night and rescued the victim in the wee hours of August 31. 

Papumpare police was quick to zero in on the accused and rescued the 10-year-old girl within the five hours of the FIR.

‘On August 24 last, the accused kidnapped the girl from Banderdewa after calling her from Sagalee and took her to his home. On August 28, accused Sahidul Islam convinced  the minor to enter into marriage at Rotary Public, Lakhimpur by changing the victim's name to ‘Sahiba Begam’ and showing her age as 19-years and converting her faith to Islam,’ informed the SP from Yupia.

The accused was produced before the court and sent to 14 days judicial custody, added the SP while appealing all the parents to be more cautious as minor girls are easy prey for such criminals.

He further requested all societies, media and NGOs to come forward to educate the minors specially the girls to remain alert against kidnapping, elopement, etc as there have been many such cases where tribal girls are lured and they eloped but are later tortured, confined and abandoned with child.

Meanwhile, the complainant, relatives, and parents of the victim have highly appreciated the SP and Police team for their prompt action.
