ITANAGAR, Jan 5: Deputy Commissioner Papum Pare Jiken Bomjen, on Friday, held a meeting with the office bearers of state unit of North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMU) to ensure no adverse impact on essential services in light of the mass agitation by drivers.
The mass agitation by the NEPMU was scheduled from January 5 to 7 next.
Responding to the request of the DC to call off their agitation, state unit General Secretary of NEPMU, Taw Pukum assured to cooperate with the district administration.
Meanwhile, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Emchi, CMD, Mudang Tacho informed that all the 18 IOCL petrol pumps have sufficient fuel. However, he requested the public to avoid panic buying.
The meeting was also attended by Papumpare District SP, Taru Gusar.
While few fuel stations remained closed the entire day within Itanagar Capital Region (ICR), motorist queued up at fuel stations at many places in the state capital over fear that stocks would run out soon with truckers keeping off the roads to protest stricter punishment in new law on hit-and-run cases.
However, by the intervention of district administration and meeting with the NEPMU, today, the fuel stations are operating as usual providing fuel to the public.
In the Winter Session of Parliament, the Union Government passed the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The legislation made overhauling changes to the criminal justice system as they replaced the IPC, CrPC, and Evidence Act.
Under the BNS, drivers who cause a serious road accident by negligent driving and run away without informing the police or any official from the administration can face punishment of up to 10 years or a fine of Rs7 lakh. Earlier, the punishment in such cases was two years in the IPC.
