NAMSAI, Jul 9: The North East Human Rights Organisation (NEHRO) based at Namsai has filed a complaint against Superindentent of Police, Sadiya, and the In-charge of Shantipur police outpost in Tinsukia district for inaction and custodial torture of a student with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Delhi. The complaint was filed on Saturday last.
According to NEHRO, Joshua Ngupok, belonging to Kangkong village in Lower Dibang Valley and a student of Himalayan University in Itanagar, was caught by some miscreants on June 1 and after beating him up badly handed over to the Shantipur police outpost. The police too tortured him brutally in custody and when his condition deteriorated he was taken to a hospital in adjoining Dibrugarh. In the hospital he was diagnosed with loss of cervical lordosis due to severe torture.
When approached, the Sadiya SP showed indifference and refused to take any action, the NEHRO said.
Thus the organisation has now approached the NHRC seeking justice for Joshua.
