ITANAGAR, May 7:The People’s Party of Arunachal held an interactive session on the theme “Defective Arunachal Statehood Act of 1986 and the role of state MPs in Parliament” under the chairmanship of its president, Kahfa Bengia.
In his address, Bengia while highlighting the objective of the program informed that the session aimed to educate the younger generation and the general voters to exercise their valuable franchise rights in future elections.
Referring to recorded documents in which former MPs, PK Thungon and Wangpa Lowang raised deep concern over the few loopholes in the Bill, Bengia informed that the duo strongly opposed when Statehood Day Bill was first place in Parliament in the year 1986 and had pleaded for necessary amendments.
Citing available records, Bengia divulged that the duo requested that Arunachal be given status at par with other Northeast states where indigenous communities have full ownership rights over the land and its resources.
He stated that as per the Act, the Governor has been equipped with more powers to deal with law and order in whatever manner he thinks fit which ultimately snatched away the constitutional rights of indigenous people over their land, religious practices and right of defence.
He also requested junior Home Minister, Kiren Rijiju to seize the opportunity and initiate necessary action to complete the task which his predecessors could not accomplish by removing the defects and introducing a constitutional amendment in the Act.
Secretary General, Kaling Jerang urged all to consider the task of correcting the defective Statehood Day Act 1986 as prime agenda for all political representatives cutting across party lines.
“The necessary amendment can only give us back our lost pride and self respect,” he added.
