TEZU, Aug 12:

A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescued 16 families from central Lohit river and Danglat areas in two days of massive rescue operations in which men, women and children were brought to safety.

“The overflowing Lohit River marooned these people at Central Lohit where some of them were taking shelter on tree tops and elevated ground to protect themselves from being swept away in the flood. The rigorous operation initiated by NDRF team, local fishermen and local officials up to late evening resulted in precious lives being saved,” informed DDMO Damchen Norbu.   The official further informed that the flood has caused loss of livestock and inundation of acres of cultivation land however there has been no human causality.

The relentless rains also damaged electric poles and water supply causing complete blackout and water crisis in the township since August 9 last. According to sources, two 33KV electric poles were washed away near the Tibetan camp and the power department is striving to restore the damage.  Sand and mud has also filled the Water Treatment Plant and will require few days to be restored, sources informed.
