ITANAGAR/NARI, Aug 23: Peaceful protest in the form of ‘Tala Bandi Andolan’ launched by various Galo organizations across Nari-Koyu circle demanding immediate functioning of Lower Siang District took a violent turn today.

Hundreds of activists are staging peaceful protest since last two days in Likabali and Nari-Koyu assembly constituencies demanding for early functionalization of Lower Siang District.

As per reports from the ADC Nari, situation is tense  but under control. Police had to resort to a mild lathi charge, tear-gas shelling and also fired at least a dozen  rounds in  the air  to disperse  the protesters  who barged into the ADC’s office.

‘No major casualties has been reported from public side  but few security personnel  sustained serious injuries  due to stone pelting by protesters,’ added ADC Nari while informing that at least 8 people have been detained  by police in connection with  provoking  the mob.

As of now 144 CrpC has been imposed in the area to contain further escalation of any kind of violence.

Meanwhile, in a separate release, the Galo Students Union said that activists had gone to the ADC office to enquire regarding the report sent to the state government regarding the ongoing Andolan.

On enquiring, it was learnt that officials at Nari had been sending wrong and falsified reports to the government regarding opening of offices within the sub-division. However, after being repeatedly provoked by the Govt officials, there was heated exchange of words leading to the officials ordering lathi charge on the peaceful protesters and firing by the security forces, the release stated.

The unions further condemned the administration for using excessive force on protesters and common denizens of Nari.
