A workshop on progressive farming and preservation of Environment and Forest was conducted by Elite Society of Dadam Area in collaboration with department of Forest, Agriculture, Horticulture, Veterinary and Fishery on Thursday wherein Khonsa West MLA Tirong Aboh graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Wanggo Lowang, Paramount Chief of Dadam area as guest of honour respectively.

 

Addressing the huge gathering, Aboh while observing the lack of trees for construction and other purposes in the area, asked the department of environment & forest to take up schemes for planting of useful trees on top priority for which fund has been earmarked.

Highlighting that the Jhum cultivation practiced since long by the local Noctes, Tutsas and Wanchos in Tirap and Longding districts has resulted in deforestation of large areas leading to water scarcity and ecological imbalance, Aboh said that cash crops with modern technology needs to be adopted to replace traditional farming system.

 Moreover, Rupees 18 lakh has been earmarked for rearing “Mithun” under Veterinary department as work agency for Khonsa. Farm materials and equipment were also distributed to the progressive farmers. A cash award of Rs.10,000 from ESDA was also awarded to National Awardee Progressive Farmer Rtd. CRPF Sbdr  Bewang Lowang, who is Chief of Bera village for his exemplary success story in mixed cash crops and teak plantation in Bera village. Aboh also distributed 3000 fish seeds against 29 Units to 29 beneficiaries of his constituency.

As a resource person from agriculture department DyDirector (Agriculture) Pangnyai Khoisia highlighted about various schemes under Agriculture department DD(Agri) and urged the locals to switch over to alternative mixed cash crops cultivation with modern technology with the help of government schemes under various departments, like Agriculture, Horticulture, Veterinary an Fishery etc, and forest plantation.

In his speech as a resource person Divisional Forest Officer Bitem Darang said that the department of Environment & Forests is in the process of developing Forest Beat and implementing Forest related activities for development of area. Proposals for Compensatory Afforestation in degraded forest areas have been submitted for Dadam and Bera villages. This CA “Compensatory Afforestation” scheme is for a period of 10 years with job avenues in form of plantation watchers & plantation supervisors with provision for construction of accommodation for plantation watchers and various other activities.
