ITANAGAR, August 24: The Government will build a dam on Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh to save the state and also Assam from the flood fury, Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati said.
The dam will help in checking the water flow coming from the Chinese side of the river, Bharati told newspersons.
The announcement comes a few days after the Ministry of External Affairs disclosed that China had not shared the water data with India this year so far as it was mandated to under the existing mechanism between the two countries.
On the rivers flowing to India from Nepal, Uma Bharati said the issue would be taken up with the country’s prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who arrived on his first official visit abroad after assuming office.
The Panchparmeshwar project will also figure in the talks, she said, adding that work on a new project to generate 5600 MW capacity was also likely to begin within a year.
