TEZU, May 20: Illegal land grabbing has been rampant in the premises of reputed Indira Gandhi Government College since it was set up in 1986. The college with a sprawling 210 acres has been experiencing stiff challenge from encroachers.

Authorities are frustrated and express helplessness over the issue which they say has become chronic.

‘We are tired of the repeated encroachment due to large scale growth and expansion of the township as the local people have started migrating to the town and our open campus area has become easy for them to trespass,’ says a source on condition of anonymity.

The department on many occasions submitted memorandums to the government to find out a lasting solution on the issue but regrettably the plea has fallen on deaf ears, he added.

The college student union also had an unpleasant encounter with an encroacher recently. Further easy trespassing, burglary and free movement of cattle are also posing concern for the college.

‘During vacation when the entire staffers go out, theft and burglary are common place. Also avenue plantation planted for beautifying the campus are being eaten up by livestock and various unforeseen anti – social problems crop up due to a porous boundary,’ says Principal IGG College, Dr T Taloh.

Minister AH & V, DD, Research and Arts and Culture, Dr. Mohesh Chai has announced to make the college an education hub. Furthermore, the college plans to start Post Graduate courses shortly but all these require adequate land to build up prerequisite infrastructure which is a challenge if the trend of encroachment continues unabated, sources added.
