ITANAGAR, Jul 27:Following direction of Chief Secretary to assess the extent of damages caused to key water supply pipelines, a team of officials headed by Principal Secretary (Home) Satya Gopal on Thursday thoroughly inspected all such locations and took stock of ongoing restoration work at Poma and Naharlagun.

The team which comprised of Commissioner (PHE) HK Shalla, DC Prince Dhawan, Chief Engineer Toko Jyoti, SE (HQ) Tayum Tok Camdir, EE (PH & WS) ,Tadar Mangku

inspected all the places where pipes were either washed away or badly damaged. They also foot marched to the main location—2 KM ahead of intake point near Poma River where restoration work is going on in war footing. The visiting team also expressed shock at the unprecedented extent of damages to the water supply system.

After fully verifying the restoration work including consultation with accompanying engineers, Gopal asserted that the restoration work may take at least 10-15 days and set the deadline for August 15 next.

Gopal hinted at laying new alternative pipelines via Papu Nallah, which will be used as a replacement to older pipelines, and also can be used to supply water to Naharlagun areas in such situations.

He further informed that to alleviate the shortage of water, about 85 vehicles have been deployed and running from morning to dusk in different sectors of Itanagar and Naharlagun.

Dwelling on the progress of work, PHED, Chief Engineer Toko Jyoti said that the base of the hanging bridge near helipad, Naharlagun which was 8 meters in height will be now increased to 20mtrs, so that it can withstand nature’s fury. He informed that construction has been started and anticipated its completion in the month of August next.

‘The alternate surface supply system will be repaired within 10 days, once the pipes are received,’ he added.
