ITANAGAR, Aug 25: Decrying the recent violence at Nari, the apex body of the Galo community, Galo Welfare Society (GWS) has vehemently condemned police action against innocent public on August 23 last at Nari.

In a press statement, GWS claimed that police resorted to violence and started lathicharge on innocent people not sparing even women and elderly persons. It further urged the state government to immediately trace out the official involved in misuse of administrative powers and brutal police action against peaceful protesters.

It may be underlined that the entire imbroglio is the consequence of the apathetic approach of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh even after a lapse of one month following the submission of the Report of the Group of Ministers (GoM) constituted by the government itself for functioning of Lower Siang District that led to peaceful non-cooperation movement, added the GWS.

The apex body has also appealed its legislators to initiate necessary intervention for immediate functionalisation of Lower Siang district with Likabali as the temporary headquarters.

Further, extending solidarity with the victims of police action, GWS demanded the government to take immediate cognizance and administrative action at Nari Sub-Division and Kora Circle with utmost urgency.

In a separate press statement, Galo Students Union (GSU) has also condemned the incident and demanded judicial enquiry on the violence meted out by the police.  The students’ body also urged the authority to sanction relief amount to those injured in the incident as well as to bear the expenses of loss of property as a result of the incident.

Meanwhile, GSU also announced to continue its ‘Tala Bandi Andolan’ till Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent  of Police are posted.
