ITANAGAR, Jun 24:

Strongly condemning the alleged killing of three activists in police firing and also extending solidarity to the demand of “Gorkhaland” by Gorkha Janamukti Morcha in West Bengal, hundreds of supporters under the banner of All Arunachal Pradesh Gorkha Youth Welfare Association held a peaceful rally from Indira Gandhi Park to Gompa on Saturday.

Interacting with reporters at IG Park, AAPGYWA, President, Shyam Ghatami strongly criticized the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee for using military force to stifle the voice of the Gorkha people aspiring for Gorkhaland.

“We condemn the atrocious act on the part of the West Bengal government and the indiscriminate torture meted towards the peaceful Gorkha people of Darjeeling, who have been demanding for separate “land” for the community since many years back,” added Ghatami.

Ghatami opined that the West Bengal government has no right to overstep the sentiments of peace loving people of Darjeeling by unconstitutionally making “Bengali’, which is a regional language as compulsory subjects and language in Darjeeling, where majority of the people are Gorkhas.

“If it is Hindi, we have no objection as Hindi is our national language and we respect that. However forcing a community to adopt regional language is unlawful and the constitution of our country also prohibits it,” he added while requesting immediate intervention of the central government in diffusing the tense atmosphere in Darjeeling.

He further alleged that voice of innocent Gorkhas is being suppressed by a shutdown on all media channels, DTH services to prevent the news from spreading to mainland India.

Recalling the promises of BJP government to give separate statehood to Gorkhas of Darjeeling, Ghatami urged the Centre to find a logical solution.

Representatives of various districts Gorkha unions including Newar AdarshKalyankari Samiti(Itanagar), All Arunachal Gorkha welfare society, Doimukh, Pasighat and Daporijo  Gorkha Welfare society etc  participated in the rally.
